MEHRGON: A CELEBRATION OF THE ARYAN PEOPLE
Mehrgon is one of the ancient holidays of the Aryan people, which was revitalized following the independence of Tajikistan. According to the Law of the Republic of Tajikistan "On Holidays" it has been recognized as a national holiday of the country. In a decision dated August 5, 2009, under №538, the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan declared that Mehrgon is celebrated with great enthusiasm throughout the nation.
The term "Mehrgon" refers to the historical and national holiday of the Aryan people. The etymology of the word "Mehrgon" connotes meanings such as "love," "owners of love", "possessing love", and "loving." Thus, Mehrgon embodies affection and love; it also symbolizes friendship, brotherhood, and mutual understanding. Moreover, Mehrgon represents the golden autumn and the period of harvest, reflecting the labor and dedication of farmers.
In a recent meeting with the intellectuals of the Republic of Tajikistan, Leader of the nation His Excellency Emomali Rahmon emphasized the significance of the ancient Tajik celebration known as "Mehrgon" and advocated for its revival. Following the President's directives, this historic holiday is now commemorated annually on October 8 as a national and state holiday.
Historically, Mehrgon was observed on the first day of the month symbolizing love and the onset of autumn. This celebration is associated with cosmic equilibrium, as day and night are of equal length during this period, which is why the month is referred to as "Love". Our ancestors held numerous ceremonies during the Mehrgon festival, reflecting the agrarian lifestyle prevalent in ancient times. Consequently, after the harvest season, it became an opportune moment for farmers to celebrate and rest.
Year by year, the volume of agricultural production in Tajikistan has been steadily increasing from Mehrgon to Mehrgon. The successful harvesting of abundant crops, including grains, potatoes, fruits, vegetables, cotton, honey, and various other agricultural products, is a crucial factor in ensuring the food security of the nation. Tajik farmers export thousands of tons of fruits, vegetables, and dried fruits to international markets, particularly to Russia, reflecting the demands of a market economy. Farmers enjoy the freedom to sell their products domestically and abroad, allowing them to generate substantial income.
The Founder of Peace and National Unity - the Leader of the Nation, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Honorable Emomali Rahmon have noted in his address that "Mehrgon is a celebration of the harvest, symbolizing abundance, happiness, friendship, unity, and loyalty". The holiday of Mehrgon emerged alongside the development of agriculture and the establishment of an agricultural calendar.
