The Department of International Relations is a structural subdivision of Avicenna Tajik State Medical University (ATSMU), established in 1977, which carries out the organizational and coordinating activities of the University in the field of international relations, aimed at integrating ATSMU into the global educational and healthcare system and strengthening its authority in the international arena.

The Department maintains international contacts with numerous higher education institutions worldwide. One of its key functions is establishing contacts with international organizations and universities in order to train highly qualified personnel and to attract leading foreign educational and scientific centers for further mutually beneficial cooperation.

Since its establishment, the Department has organized education for representatives of more than 37 countries, with over 3,134 foreign graduates to date. Currently, ATSMU educates foreign citizens from 32 countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Belarus, Burundi, China, Egypt, Finland, India, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Turkey, Turkmenistan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Uzbekistan, Yemen, and Zimbabwe.

International students are enrolled across five faculties: General Medicine, Dentistry, Pediatrics, Preventive Medicine, and Pharmacy, at undergraduate, postgraduate (scientific/PhD), and postgraduate clinical (residency) levels.

ATSMU maintains bilateral cooperation agreements and memoranda of understanding with higher education institutions and international associations in 16 countries — 101 agreements in total — and participates in a number of international academic and research programs, including exchange programs, joint research initiatives, summer schools, and international conferences.

International recognition and accreditation

ATSMU's international standing is reflected in its listing and participation in the following global registries, accreditation systems, and ranking platforms:

• World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) — ATSMU is officially listed as a recognized medical school in this global registry, which supports graduates seeking international document verification and professional registration abroad.
• ECFMG (USA) — as a WDOMS-listed institution, ATSMU graduates are eligible for ECFMG certification and USMLE examinations.
• EPIC — graduates' academic credentials can be verified through this international primary-source verification system.
• PMDC (Pakistan), National Medical Commission (India) — diplomas of ATSMU graduates are subject to review through the recognition and verification frameworks used by these national regulatory bodies.
• World Education Services (WES) — graduates may submit their diplomas for credential equivalency assessment in Canada and the USA.
• World Higher Education Database (WHED – UNESCO/IAU) — ATSMU is registered as an officially recognized higher education institution.
• ENQA/DEQAR, NAAR (Kazakhstan) — the University participates in external quality assurance and accreditation processes conducted by recognized regional agencies.
• Academic presence and standing are also reflected on Times Higher Education (THE), Scopus, EduRank, AD Scientific Index, and UniRank.

Key activities:

1. Establishment and development of effective, mutually beneficial partnerships with leading educational and scientific institutions worldwide; preparation of bilateral and multilateral cooperation programs in the field of science and education:
• Facilitating the participation of ATSMU in international educational programs;
• Facilitating the participation of faculty and students in academic mobility programs;
• Assisting with staff development abroad;
• Facilitating cooperation with foreign higher education institutions and medical institutions/organizations in the field of scientific research;
• Implementing international activities, and concluding agreements with higher education institutions, international organizations, and foreign partners;
• Assisting in obtaining international educational and scientific grants;
2. Involvement of foreign citizens in the educational process, and organizing their preparation and internships at ATSMU;
