COMMUNICATION BETWEEN DOCTOR AND PATIENT IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES

COMMUNICATION BETWEEN DOCTOR AND PATIENT IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES

Communication is a crucial part of every doctor’s work. The ability to ask the right questions, listen to the patient, and explain the diagnosis and treatment affects the quality of medical care. Doctors who speak foreign languages can offer better service to patients who speak different languages, which is especially important in the context of international medicine and medical tourism.

Modern medicine requires specialists to not only know general languages but also the specific medical terminology in foreign languages. Studying foreign languages helps students acquire the medical vocabulary needed to communicate with patients and overcome language barriers.

To prepare students for real-life communication with patients, it is essential to include topics related to medical consultations in the educational material.

Discussing the symptoms of illnesses and patient complaints is crucial in the first stage of a medical consultation. Students need to be able to ask the right questions and correctly interpret the patient's answers.

Example: Patient: «I have a headache, and it’s been going on for two days». Doctor: «Is the pain sharp, dull, or throbbing?».

Once the patient's symptoms are identified, the doctor moves on to diagnosis and examination. Correct medical terminology is necessary to explain to the patient which tests or procedures are needed.

Example: Doctor: «I will need to take your blood pressure now». Patient: «Is there any reason to be concerned about my blood pressure?».

After the diagnosis, the doctor must explain the patient's condition and prescribe treatment. It is important to explain medical terms in simple, understandable language so that the patient understands the issue and is ready to follow the doctor's recommendations.

Example: Doctor: «You have an infection, but don't worry — it can be treated with antibiotics». Patient: «How often do I need to take the medicine?».

In stressful situations, it is important for doctors to show empathy and support the patient emotionally. Patients may feel anxious about a diagnosis, procedure, or surgery, and the doctor should be able to offer reassurance.

Example: Patient: «I’m really nervous about the surgery. What if something goes wrong?». Doctor: «It’s completely understandable to feel this way. We will take every necessary precaution, and the surgery has a high success rate».

To effectively learn communication skills, role-playing and simulating real doctor-patient situations help students practice in realistic conditions. Students can take turns playing the role of the doctor and the patient, using medical vocabulary in their interactions.

Teaching communication between doctor and patient in foreign language classes helps students prepare for real-life practice in an international medical environment. Developing professional vocabulary, the ability to ask the right questions, explain diagnoses and treatments, and show empathy toward patients are all important aspects of preparing future medical professionals.
