AVICENNA - THE GREAT THINKER

On 24 April 2025 at the department of propaedeutics of children’s diseases under the guidance of assistant Rakhmatullaeva M.A. an open lesson was held on the topic: "Avicenna - a great thinker". The presentation was prepared by 3rd year 48th group students of the medical faculty Manonov T. and Khoshimova S.

The eastern scientist Abu Ali Hussein ibn Abdullah ibn Sino was known in Europe as Avicenna. His works on medicine and other fields became known there under this name. As an encyclopedic scientist, he covered all branches of knowledge, was distinguished by a phenomenal memory and sharpness of thought. Avicenna is one of the genius doctors in the history of mankind. He was an outstanding figure of the Islamic renaissance. His medical works are still studied by modern doctors. Avicenna is one of the people who left a bright mark on the history of mankind. He is known as a doctor, philosopher, mathematician, musician, poet, a great scientist whose works were left in 29 fields of science. It is difficult to list all his talents. Sometimes nature shows its miracles so that we do not forget about its power, and then geniuses like Avicenna are born. He is a great physician, comparable to Galen and Hippocrates, an outstanding natural scientist of Galileo's level, a mathematician, physicist, chemist, and specialist in animal physiology. He also studied music theory, and his knowledge of it was useful during the Renaissance. The greatest of his books is "The Canon of medicine". But other works have also gone down in history, have become classics – «the Book of Salvation», « the Book of Knowledge», «the Book of Instructions and Notes», «the Book of Fair Trial».

The exact date of his birth is unknown, usually the month of Shaban or Ramadan in 428 years, according to the Islamic calendar (980 AD) is called. Place of birth - the village of Afshana near Bukhara - the capital of the Samanid state. The boy showed exceptional abilities and talent from an early age. By the age of 10, he knew almost the entire Koran by heart. At school, where they studied jurisprudence, he succeeded so much that people much older than him turned to the 12-year-old teenager for advice. He studied logic, philosophy, geometry, astronomy from famous scientists of Bukhara. From the age of 14, Abu Ali ibn Sino continued his studies on his own, read Aristotle's Metaphysics and Al-Farabi's commentary on it, which helped him understand this philosophy. He studied medicine from books, but supplemented his knowledge with his observations of patients. At that time, he visited people with severe illnesses, tried to understand complex diseases, to understand how the human body is organized. By the age of 16, a young man became a famous doctor, successfully treated the emir of Bukhara. For this he gained access to his library where he studied rare manuscripts and books. Avicenna's name stands next to the immortal names of the great thinkers of mankind. According to scientists, Avicenna wrote more than 450 works, of which only 274 have survived. Ibn Sino left a huge legacy: books on medicine, logic, physics, mathematics and other sciences. Avicenna's works were written mainly in Arabic and Farsi. They cover, in addition to philosophical disciplines, chemistry, geology, grammar, poetics, history and mysticism. In the Canon of medicine, Ibn Sino suggested that diseases could be caused by some smaller creatures. They also spoil the water, transmitting disease. He was the first to draw attention to the contagiousness of smallpox, defined the difference between cholera and plague, described leprosy, separating it from other diseases, studied a number of other diseases. On 18th June 1037y Ibn Sino died, having lived in complete fifty-seven years.

Before his death, he ordered to let go of all his slaves, rewarding them, and to distribute all his property to the poor. The scientist found his resting place in Hamadan. Here, already in the twentieth century, a mausoleum was erected, at which a library of the great doctor's works and a museum were created. Here are the words of Avicenna before his death, passed on to us, his descendants, his students: ‘We die in full consciousness and take with us only one thing: the consciousness that we have learnt nothing. And this was said by a man who enthusiastically devoted his whole life, energy, youth and health to learning.

From the black ashes to the heavenly bodies.

I have solved the mysteries of the wisest words and deeds.

I have avoided insidiousness and untangled all the knots,

Only the knot of death I could not untangle
