March 22 - World Water Day

World Water Day, celebrated on March 27 every year, is a key moment to raise awareness of the importance of water in human life and the need for its protection and rational use. In 2024, this date is intended to remind the world community of the importance of water conservation, as water is the basis for the existence of all living organisms on the planet, a key component of economic development, and the key to the health of ecosystems.

The importance of water resources on a global scale. The planet's water resources have many functions, the most important of which is to sustain life. Water is essential for drinking, cooking, personal hygiene, agricultural production, industry and energy. But despite its critical importance, there is a severe shortage of clean drinking water in many parts of the world. According to the World Health Organization, more than 2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water, leading to the spread of water-associated diseases and increasing child mortality.

Problems and challenges. One of the main problems in water management is the unsustainable use and pollution of water resources. Industrial effluents, agricultural fertilizers and pesticides, as well as domestic wastes enter water bodies, rendering water unusable. Climatic changes also have a significant impact on water resources, altering the hydrological cycle and causing droughts and floods that exacerbate already existing problems.

Solutions. In Tajikistan, a country with abundant water resources that simultaneously faces challenges related to their rational use and protection, World Water Day takes on special significance. Water is central to the country's economy and social sphere, being a key factor for agriculture, energy and domestic consumption. However, the challenges of climate change, water management and pollution require comprehensive and effective solutions at the national level.

National programs and initiatives

Tajikistan recognizes the importance of sustainable water resources management and is making significant efforts to address existing problems. One of the key initiatives has been the development and implementation of the National Water Resources Management Strategy. This document covers a wide range of issues, including the conservation of water resources, their rational use and protection against pollution. The main emphasis is placed on integrating the efforts of various sectors of the economy and ensuring access to clean drinking water for the population.

In this regard, at the initiative of the Republic of Tajikistan, the UN General Assembly adopted the following important "water" resolutions: - declaration of 2003 as the International Year of Freshwater (UN General Assembly Resolution 55/196 of December 20, 2000); - declaration of 2005-2015 as the International Decade of Action "Water for Life". International Decade of Action "Water for Life" (UN General Assembly Resolution of December 23, 2003, 58/217); - declaration of 2013 as the International Year of Water Cooperation (UN General Assembly Resolution of December 20, 2010, 65/154). Also, the International Decade of Action "Water for Sustainable Development", 2018-2028 was declared by the UN General Assembly Resolution of December 21, 2016, A/RES/71/222, at the initiative of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Leader of the nation, His excellency Emomali Rahmon.
